rock-n-roll-or-fuck-off

You see this man? Even if you don’t recognize him, I’m sure you will know his name. His name is Kurt Cobain. And I will bet you anything, when you read that name, you automatically thought “suicide”. Yes, Kurt committed suicide, and that’s the only thing most people know about him. (That, and that he was in a band called “Nirvana”) This makes me feel a variety of emotions. Angry, sad…. The list goes on. See, Kurt wasn’t some “Tortured Genius” as most of you would like to think or truly believe. No. Kurt Cobain was a human. He was a person. He was a father. A husband. A friend. A loving person that cared about equality and love. Not some “Don’t-Give-A-Shit Punk Rock Star”. And most people have either forgotten that, or don’t know. And I know what you are thinking… “You never knew him, how would you know?”. Well I’ll tell you how I would know. One day, last year, I decided the world sucked and that no one would miss me anyways, so i went to the medicine cabinet and took around 1000 milligrams of a medication called “Effexor”. I almost had a seizure and I had to stay under supervision for 24 hours to make sure I was going to be alright. So that’s how I would know. I have been in Kurt’s shoes and I know how bad it hurts. Just thinking “wow, everything is just going downhill and it’s never going to get any better”. You are probably wondering what all this personal bullshit has to do with any of this. Well, it comes back around to the reason why Kurt shouldn’t be remebered as “That Guy Who Committed Suicide”. The reason is because not many people with mental health issues (including me) wants to talk about their mental health issues. We don’t want to talk about them. We think they are terrible burdens, flaws and weaknesses. Kurt wouldn’t want to be remebered a for his flaws. That’s not his legacy. His legacy is spreading love. Most people don’t know that he was pro-feminist, supported gay rights 100% and loved people not based on their skin color. This is how he should be remebered. He liked that about himself. He wouldn’t want to be remembered for committing suicide, because he saw his mental health as a flaw. How would you feel if you were an amazing charity worker, but the only thing people remembered about you after you died was that you had ugly hair? Yeah, it wouldn’t feel too good, would it? So please just think about how amazing he was. He was so sweet and loving and caring and fair. Did he have some flaws? Yeah. But you don’t look at a flower and say “Oh, it’s not my favorite shade of pink” or “The petals are too big”. You look at it and say “Wow, what a beautiful flower, it’s a perfect shape”. So please. PLEASE. Next time you hear about Kurt Cobain, see a picture of him or listen to Nirvana, Don’t think “He committed suicide”. Think “Wow, I am so proud of him for not being afraid to say what he thought” or “He was so brave” or “He was a good person”. Kurt, you are in my heart forever and I’m so proud of you for being a great person and I’m so sorry you couldn’t take it anymore.
Please, see Kurt for who he was.
Imperfect, like all of us.
